Patricia Ann Phelps

Patricia Ann Phelps passed away on June 28, 2026 in the comforting embrace of home hospice in Alpine, California, with her husband Pete, son Chris, and best friend & sister, Kathy at her side. Immediate family members; niece Kelly, great niece Erika, and her caregiver of recent years, Kat, were often at her side for the past several years. Her courageous 24-year battle with Parkinson's Disease ended peacefully that night, leaving behind a legacy of hope and strength. Patricia had been in hospice care for the last two weeks of her life after valiantly fighting Parkinsons for 24 years; with strength, courage and the will to live each day to its fullest. Never a word of “poor me”, Pat left us with a whisper of “I love you.” Pat (or Patty Ann as she liked to be called), was born on December 13, 1947, in Cleveland, Ohio, to Allard Borkoff (Burke) and Elizabeth Mann. She was raised in Ohio by them and her step-father, Hank Westott, whose memories she cherished deeply. She is survived by her devoted husband, JP “Pete” Phelps, her loving son, Christopher Liosi, and her treasured grandson, Luca, who brought immense joy to her life. Pat is survived by siblings; Kathleen Smith of San Diego, and Michael, Peter, Judith, and Christopher Burke of Ohio. A proud alumna of Bedford High School, class of 1966, Patricia was eagerly anticipating her 60th class reunion this week. Her academic pursuits then led her to Ohio State University followed by technical X-ray school, where she honed her skills and embarked on a fulfilling career as an X-ray technician at Sunrise Hospital in Las Vegas. Patricia seamlessly balanced three roles back then; also working as a Realtor with Coldwell Banker and raising Chris. In 1979 Pat met her future husband Pete in Las Vegas and, in 1984, she moved to San Diego to join him. The following year they exchanged wedding vows in a beautiful backyard ceremony at their home overlooking Mission Bay. “In sickness and in health”, their marriage was a testament to love and partnership. Never one to shy away from challenges, Patricia established the Same Old Grind in Clairemont, one of San Diego's pioneering coffee businesses. Even after retiring to Alpine in 2004, her entrepreneurial spirit thrived, leading her to establish the Same Old Suds laundromat in Santee, which she operated for another five years. Patricia's spirit of giving extended beyond her professional life. She was deeply involved in the Parkinson's community, walking and sponsoring her "Team Imagine" in the annual Parkinson's 5K “Walk for the Cure” from 2002 to 2026. Her compassionate heart and dedication to finding a cure were unwavering. Pat’s interests were as diverse as her talents. She loved Motown Music and both water and snow skiing with vacations to Europe, the mountains, the Caribbean, and Hawaii. At home, she was a vibrant part of the San Diego baseball community; supporting Chris through Tecolote Youth Baseball, USD baseball, 5 years of Italian League baseball, and Chris’ ownership of Brickyard Cages, the baseball training facility near Mission Bay. Her home was also graced by the companionship of 13 loyal German Shepherds and Golden Retrievers over 40 years, who offered their comfort and companionship throughout her life, but now miss their “Mama”. Finally, we will miss Pat’s quick wit, charm, and innate friendliness which left an indelible mark on everyone she met. Known for her ability to bring people together, she was the glue that held her family and community close. Her generosity of spirit and unwavering kindness will be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her. Pat overcame many obstacles in life with positivity and grace. Now we wait to see her again in a better place. Patricia’s final services will be held at Miramar National Cemetery, located at 5795 Nobel Drive, San Diego, on August 13, 2026, at 11:30 AM. In honor of Patricia's life and her battle with Parkinson's, donations can be made to the Parkinson's Association of San Diego, CA. if you feel that is appropriate. The family wishes to share a special message: "If you can, home hospice, in familiar surroundings, is the best place we know of to share your final time with someone that you have loved all of your life." Patricia's life was a testament to this sentiment, filled with love, laughter, and an unyielding spirit that will continue to inspire all who knew her.
